Niyonsaba's mother has been the most influential person in her career. Her support and encouragement have been pivotal. Despite facing an injury that kept her out of competitive action from mid-2013 until early 2015, Niyonsaba's determination never wavered.

In 2016, Niyonsaba became the first female athlete representing Burundi to win an Olympic medal. She claimed silver in the 800m at the Rio de Janeiro Games. This achievement marked a significant milestone in her career and for Burundi.

Challenges and Advocacy

Niyonsaba has hyperandrogenism, a condition characterised by higher testosterone levels. The International Association of Athletics Federations introduced eligibility rules in 2018 affecting athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD). These rules impacted her participation in the 800m event. Niyonsaba has spoken out against these regulations, calling them discriminatory.

"For me, it's about discrimination. It doesn't make sense. For sure, I didn't choose to be born like this. I love running, and I will not stop running," she said.

Philosophy and Community Work

Niyonsaba lives by the motto: "Laughing is a free medicine. Laugh often, without measure." Beyond her athletic pursuits, she represents UNICEF in Burundi as a motivational speaker. She aims to inspire children to dream and believe in themselves.

"I want to inspire them to dream, to believe in themselves. I tell them they push me. Their support gives me motivation," she shared.

Looking ahead, Niyonsaba plans to compete in the 5000m at future Olympic Games. Her resilience and dedication continue to drive her forward as she aims for new heights in her athletic career.
