Gabriele Detti Biography

Detti's introduction to swimming was quite unique. "I was thrown into the swimming pool where my uncle and coach Stefano Morini worked when I was eight months old. I don't know if it was my mum or dad who threw me in, but since then I haven't been able to do without swimming," he recalls.

Professional Career

Detti represents CS Esercito, Italy. Over the years, he has drawn inspiration from several sports icons, including Italian swimmer Massimiliano Rosolino, German swimmer Paul Biedermann, US swimmer Michael Phelps, and US basketball player Michael Jordan.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout his career, Detti has faced multiple injuries. In 2021, he missed the European Short Course Championships in Kazan due to a virus. An injury to his left shoulder ruled him out of the 2017 European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. He experienced pain again during the 2018 National Championships in Riccione and had to withdraw.

Detti also missed the 2015 World Championships in Kazan due to a urinary tract infection. At age eight, he required surgery after fracturing his tibia and fibula bones when his right leg was crushed by a rock at the seaside.

Superstitions and Beliefs

Detti has a unique pre-race ritual. "I listen to the same music before every race. I'm a huge fan of the rock group Linkin Park," he shares. His sporting philosophy is simple yet profound: "I work every day to improve. I swim for myself, mainly to have fun. I swim because I like to do it, then the results come and this makes me happy."

Focus on Shorter Distances

Detti won bronze in the 1500m freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, by May 2021, he announced that he would not compete in this event at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Instead, he decided to focus on shorter distances like the 400m and 800m freestyle events.

"The 1500s are no longer my race. I am an old man and I will stake everything on the 400m and 800m and, just taking into account my age, I could try the 200m," Detti stated.

Current Residence and Occupation

Currently residing in Ostia, Italy, Detti is also an Armed Forces athlete. He speaks Italian fluently and continues to train under his uncle Stefano Morini.

Gabriele Detti's journey in swimming is marked by early beginnings, significant achievements, and overcoming numerous challenges. His dedication to improving every day and his love for swimming continue to drive him forward.
