Greysia Polii Biography

Polii was inspired by Indonesian players Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky. She often imagined travelling the world by playing badminton. Her local badminton field became her training ground after watching these stars on television.

Professional Journey

Polii trains six days a week at the National Training Centre in Jakarta. She plays for PB Jaya Raya and is coached by Eng. Hian. Known for her right-handed play, she has faced several challenges, including shoulder injuries in 2011 and 2019.

Achievements and Milestones

Polii and her women's doubles partner Apriyani Rahayu were named 2020/21 Pair of the Year by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). They also became the first Indonesian players to win gold in women's doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Overcoming Challenges

After struggling with her backhand serve due to a shoulder injury, Polii switched to a forehand serve in 2020. Her coach emphasised that the point mattered more than the method of serving. This change helped her continue playing at a professional level.

Doubles Partnership

Polii teamed up with Apriyani Rahayu in 2017. Despite a significant age gap, they found a balance that brought energy to their game. Polii shared wisdom and experience, while Rahayu contributed power and determination.

Olympic Disqualification

In 2012, Polii and her former partner Meiliana Jauhari were disqualified from the London Olympics for allegedly attempting to lose a match to manipulate the draw. This incident almost led Polii to quit badminton, but she regained her motivation during her suspension.

Business Ventures

Outside of badminton, Polii and her husband Felix Djimin run Grazia Residence, a real estate business in Tomohon, North Sulawesi. They aim to provide quality housing for the people of Tomohon.

Personal Life

Polii resides in Jakarta with her husband Felix Djimin. She is fluent in English and Indonesian and balances her career as an athlete with being a business owner.

Awards and Philosophy

Polii's sporting philosophy is encapsulated in her motto: "I am not what I have done, I am what I have overcome." Her mother Evie Pakasi has been the most influential person in her career.

Greysia Polii's journey is a testament to resilience and dedication. From early inspirations to overcoming significant challenges, she continues to make an impact both on and off the court.
