Habiba Ghribi Biography

Ghribi's career took off when she became the first female athlete representing Tunisia to win a medal at the Olympic Games. She secured gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the London 2012 Olympics. The previous year, she had won gold at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Both victories were initially second-place finishes but were upgraded to gold after Russian athlete Yuliya Zaripova's results were disqualified for doping violations. These achievements marked significant milestones for Tunisian athletics.

Injuries and Challenges

Throughout her career, Ghribi faced several injuries. She missed the 2017 World Championships in London due to injury and was sidelined for the 2013 World Championships in Moscow because of knee issues. In 2010, she underwent surgery on both feet, causing her to miss most of that year.

Ghribi's accolades include being named African Sportswoman of the Year by Jeune Afrique in 2015 and Sportswoman of the Year by the Arab Union of Sports Journalists the same year. She also received the Achievement in Sports award at the 2015 Arab Women of the Year Awards held in London.

In Tunisia, she was honoured with the Order of the Republic [third class] in 2015 and named Sportswoman of the Year by Tunisian newspaper Assahafa in 2009. Additionally, she received the Gold Medal of Commemoration of Peace by the International Association of Peacekeepers.

In September 2020, Ghribi began working as a long-distance running coach for the Qatari women's athletics team. Her coaching role marks a new chapter in her career, allowing her to impart her knowledge and experience to upcoming athletes.

Ghribi has also served as an ambassador for Tunisian sport, appointed by the minister of youth affairs and sports and supported by the president of the Tunisian National Olympic Committee. She is an ambassador for the International Academy of Athletes for the Culture of Peace.
