Helen Glover Biography

Glover's international debut came in 2010 at the World Cup in Bled, Slovenia, representing Great Britain. Despite missing the 2010 World Cup in Lucerne due to illness, she quickly established herself as a formidable competitor under the guidance of national coach James Harris.

Achievements and Recognition

One of Glover's most memorable achievements was earning selection for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She and her partner Heather Stanning were named the 2015 World Female Crew of the Year by the World Rowing Federation. In 2014, she received the British Olympic Association Trophy for being rowing's female athlete of the year.

Glover was honoured as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013 for her services to rowing. Following her gold medal win in women's coxless pairs at the 2012 London Olympics, she was featured on a stamp with Stanning, had a postbox painted gold in her honour in Penzance, and even had a flower named after her.

Personal Life and Education

Glover resides in Reading, England, with her husband Steve Backshall, a naturalist and television presenter. They have three children: son Logan (born 2018) and twins Willow and Kit (born 2020). She holds degrees in Exercise Science and Sports Science from Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Comeback Journey

After stepping away from rowing following the 2016 Rio Olympics to start a family, Glover returned to elite-level sport in January 2021. Her comeback was driven by her desire to inspire her children, especially daughter Willow. Despite challenges like low iron levels and breastfeeding twins, she focused on intense training sessions to prepare for the Tokyo Games.

Influences and Hobbies

Glover cites her father and Ethiopian distance runner Haile Gebrselassie as her heroes. Outside of rowing, she enjoys spending time with her family and engaging in outdoor activities. Her father Jimmy played rugby union at club level in England.

Other Sporting Pursuits

Before rowing, Glover competed in cross-country running at junior international level and was part of the England satellite hockey squad. These experiences contributed to her athletic versatility and competitive spirit.

As Glover continues to balance her sporting career with family life, her journey remains an inspiring testament to dedication and resilience.
