Yo-Yo Test: Fitness Levels Of Indian Hockey Players Better Than Cricketers, Says Hardik Singh

Hardik Singh reveals that the Indian men's hockey team significantly outperforms cricketers in the Yo-Yo Test, highlighting their exceptional fitness levels and dedication. This insight challenges common perceptions about athlete fitness standards in India.

Hardik Singh, the vice-captain and midfielder of the Indian men's hockey team, recently shed light on the remarkable fitness levels of hockey players in comparison to their cricketing counterparts, specifically mentioning their impressive performances in the Yo-Yo Test.

The test is widely recognised as a crucial fitness benchmark for athletes worldwide and has become particularly significant in India for determining a cricketer's eligibility for the national team. Hardik pointed out that hockey players' Yo-Yo Test scores are substantially higher than those of cricketers, a fact that might surprise many.

The Yo-Yo Test measures an athlete's endurance and has become a key factor in team selection processes, especially in cricket. Indian cricketers are known for their fitness, with star batter Virat Kohli setting a high standard with a score of 17.2, above the team's minimum requirement of 16.5.

However, according to Hardik, the hockey team outperforms this standard by a wide margin, consistently achieving scores around 23, indicating a significantly higher level of fitness.

Hardik elaborated on the Yo-Yo Test's structure, explaining that it begins at level 15 and includes eight sprints, with the difficulty increasing up to the final level of 23.8. Impressively, seven members of the men's hockey team have reached this peak level. Moreover, Hardik compared these achievements with the fitness levels of cricket players, where a score of 19 or 20 is often hailed as exceptional. Yet, goalkeeper PR Sreejesh alone surpasses this with a score of 21.

The Indian men's hockey team's fitness is not just a male domain; the junior girls' team also showcases exceptional endurance. Their Yo-Yo Test scores hover around 17-18, comparable to Kohli's, underscoring the rigorous fitness standards across Indian hockey.

Hardik's own contributions to the sport were highlighted at the Paris Olympics 2024, where he played a pivotal role in India securing a bronze medal against Spain in a closely contested match, achieving a 2-1 victory. This triumph marked India's second consecutive Olympic bronze, a further testament to the team's prowess and dedication.

In conclusion, Hardik Singh's insights into the fitness levels of hockey players compared to cricketers challenge common perceptions and highlight the rigorous training and dedication of the hockey team.

Their exceptional Yo-Yo Test scores not only reflect their physical capabilities but also underscore the demanding nature of the sport, contributing to their success on the international stage.
