Bhubaneswar, Feb 3: Following the disappointment of failing to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics, the Indian women's hockey team is gearing up for their participation in the Women's FIH Pro League 2023-24, with their first match against China scheduled at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday (February 3).
India earned their place in the league after clinching gold at the Women's Nation Cup Spain 2022. Despite finishing third in their debut season in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-22, winning the ongoing edition guarantees entry to the Women's Hockey World Cup in 2026 in northwestern Europe.

The Indian team is set to play a total of four matches in Bhubaneswar against the Netherlands (February 4), Australia (February 7), and the USA (February 9), before moving to Rourkela for return matches against the same opponents from February 12 onwards.
With that, we come to an end of the live coverage of this game. Stay tuned for more updates and sports news.

Both India and China scored one field goal each, but the latter capitalised on a penalty corner, securing a lead that ultimately led to their victory. India managed to earn only one penalty corner compared to China's eleven.

Full Time! China 2 - 1 India! This is the first win for China against India in the FIH Pro League and pocket their first win. India were in the game but missed their opportunities. The Chinese first got a field goal from Dan Wen, via field goal in the 40th minute and later Gu Bingfeng converted a PC in the 52nd minute to give her team a lead.
For India, back-to-back PCs and failure to convert the opportunities didn't aid their cause. Coach Schopman would definitely not be happy with her team.
59'! PC for China. Savita saves the shot but the defenders fail to clear it and another PC for the opposition. In the second PC, the Indian skipper saves it. Time is racing out of India's hands.
PC for China in 58'! Another PC earned by Chinese and Savita saves it. India have just 90 seconds remaining to salvage something from the match. Losing possession near the edge of the circle at this crucial juncture will only hinder their efforts.
China take lead! Savita and her teammates tried to thwart relentless attacks from Gu Bingfeng and Zhang Ying. But the Chinese manage to breach the defence as the loose ball finds its way to Gu positioned on the right side of the circle. With a powerful slap shot, she directs the ball across the goal into the opposite corner of the net.
The Chinese, on the other hand, are learning from the mistakes they are committing in the game. They are pressing hard and pushing the Indians on the backfoot. When the Indians are attacking they are good at blocking the hosts.
4th Quarter begins in Bhubaneswar! Indian eves conceded a field goal in the third quarter, giving a chance to the opposition to equalise. The hosts also had their first penalty corner of the evening but failed to convert. They need to plug the loopholes in the last 15 minutes to emerge victorious. Coach Schopman would want a better show from her girls in the last quarter.
45'! Indian team gets a first penalty corner of the match, and Gurjit Kaur - the dragflick expert - collects the ball but hits it straight onto the stomach of the first rusher, Ma Ning. Opportunity lost from the Indians.
IND 1-1 CHN
How China equalised? Liu Hua attempted to control a high ball in the Indian circle. Dan Wen takes possession and, while falling, hit the ball towards the goal with a slap shot. Savita - the goalie - rushed forward but the ball manages to loop over her. Udita's clearance attempt futile as it spins into the net.
Goal! China equalise in the third quarter and it was some good stick work and some luck which came their way. Dan Wen equalises for Chinese
IND 1-1 CHN
Opportunities arise for both teams, yet neither can seize the moment. Udita's pass is intercepted by a Chinese forward, who swiftly advances towards the goal, only to have Nikki Pradhan unexpectedly intercept the ball. Meanwhile, at the opposite end, Lalremsiami's cross goes uncontrolled by Mumtaz as she would have had a clear opportunity convert.
IND 1 - 0 CHN
Missed Opportunity! Sangita Kumari advances along the goal line and pulls it back. Neha Goyal and Katariya are positioned nearby, but Neha struggles to generate enough power for her shot. The Chinese defenders successfully cleared the ball from danger.
IND 1 - 0 CHN
Third Quarter Begins! The Chinese forwards are making entrances in the opposition circle early on with the hopes of equalising. But they've been tad nervy so far at the start of the second half.
"We are doing some good things, but we certainly need to do better. We need to be more daring in the approach," says India coach Janneke Schopman just before the start of the second half in Bhubaneswar. Both teams are busy strategising before returning to the turf. It will be interesting to see who scores the first goal, or not in the third quarter.
Half Time! At the end of the first half, the scoreline reads 1-nil in India's favour but it could well have been more than that had the Indian attackers converted the opportunities in their hand. Just before the close of the second quarter, Salima Tete and others had some chances to convert but they missed it. Chinese forwards too had their moments but they failed to net the goal despite consistently swarming in the opposition circle. The Chinese had two back-to-back penalty corners but failed to convert, courtesy of some better defending.
28'! Another sloppy effort from Indian forwards as they failed to convert the possession. A slip-up in the opposition circle wasted the effort and opportunity to score.
20'! Indian defenders have done well to prevent the Chinese forwards from equalising in the second quarter so far. At the same time, the Indians too couldn't extend their lead in the second quarter.
2nd quarter begins and the Chinese attackers earn a penalty corner within 30 seconds. Sloppy work in the circle from the Indian defenders.
GOAL!! Vandana Katariya the senior pro gives India a lead just ahead of the end of the first quarter.
IND 1-0 CHN
13'! The Chinese strikers are now relentless in their attack as they are hovering around the Indian circle more frequently, but they've missed the opportunities to convert. Though they've come too close to netting the goal twice.
11'! The Chinese strikers have made two penetrations in the Indian circle but failed to convert it so far.
For India, Gurjit Kaur, Salima Tete, Mumtaz and Navneet Kaur have been active on the turf but couldn't succeed.
The first five minutes of the game has seen both teams making penetrations in the opposition's half but the defenders on both ends are alert. No success for any side so far.
IND 0-0 CHN
Hockey India has congratulated Salima Tete on making her 100th appearance for the Indian Women's Hockey Team. Salima, known for her blistering pace, made her debut for India in the 2016 Test Matches: AUS v IND (W) held in Melbourne in November 2016. Since then, Salima has set up numerous goals for her teammates and scored 14 goals herself.
