Ranchi, Oct 30: The Indian Women's Hockey Team delivered an electrifying performance as they defeated China 2-1 in a thrilling encounter on Monday (October 30) during their third match in the Jharkhand Women's Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023.
Deepika (15') and Salima Tete (26') were the heroes, each scoring a goal for the Indian squad, while China's lone goal came from Jiaqi Zhong (41').

In a captivating contest, India seized the initiative right from the start, dominating China during the opening quarter. They controlled the majority of the possession, consistently making incursions into the circle, subjecting China's defense to a rigorous examination.
India's attacking prowess was evident as they earned a penalty corner in the dying moments of the first quarter. However, they couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Nevertheless, the home team was awarded a penalty stroke shortly afterward, which Deepika (15') expertly converted with a precise shot into the bottom corner, granting India a well-deserved 1-0 lead.
Despite trailing 1-0, China began the second quarter with an offensive mindset, coming dangerously close to equalizing. However, Indian Captain Savita showcased her brilliance with an outstanding save, preserving India's lead. Simultaneously, India intensified their offensive onslaught, maintaining pressure on China.
This approach bore fruit when Salima Tete (26'), left unmarked, unleashed a well-placed and powerful shot from the edge of the circle, securing India's second goal. China did earn a penalty corner in the closing moments of the second quarter, but India's resilient defense held firm, ensuring they entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
The third quarter commenced with India resuming their offensive efforts, securing an early penalty corner that China's defense effectively thwarted, preventing the hosts from extending their lead. Nevertheless, India persisted in their relentless attack, keeping China on the back foot.
Meanwhile, China adjusted their strategy by prioritizing possession and counter-attacks, a strategy that paid off when Jiaqi Zhong (41') capitalized on a penalty corner, reducing the deficit and reigniting their hopes. However, no further goals were scored in the penultimate quarter, which concluded with India leading 2-1.
Even with a slender lead, India remained committed to their attacking style in the final quarter. China, on the other hand, exhibited astute ball control and secured a couple of penalty corners, but they failed to capitalize on these opportunities.
As the clock ticked down, China escalated their offensive efforts in pursuit of an equalizer, but India's defense remained steadfast, securing a 2-1 victory. India's next challenge is against Japan in their fourth match of the tournament, scheduled for October 31 at 20:30 hrs IST.
