Jack Laugher Biography

Laugher trains at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds, England. He represents the City of Leeds Diving Club and is coached by Joe Meszaros and Adam Smallwood. His international debut came in 2010, competing for Great Britain.

Achievements and Milestones

In 2016, Laugher and his diving partner Chris Mears won Great Britain's first Olympic gold medal in diving at the Rio de Janeiro Games. Laugher also secured a silver medal in the 3m individual springboard event, making him the first British diver to win two medals at a single Olympic Games.

Laugher achieved another milestone in 2015 by becoming the first British diver to win two medals at the same world championships. He claimed bronze in both the 3m individual and synchronised springboard events at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

In 2010, Laugher became the first British diver to be crowned world junior champion by winning gold in the 3m springboard at the World Junior Championships in Tucson, USA.

Awards and Honours

Laugher's accolades include being named Diver of the Year by British Swimming for three consecutive years (2017-2019) and Overall Athlete of the Year in 2018. He was also named European Male Diver of the Year by LEN in 2016 and 2018.

In December 2021, Harrogate Borough Council renamed Ripon Leisure Centre as the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre. Additionally, he was honoured with an MBE in the 2017 New Year's Honours list.

Throughout his career, Laugher has faced several injuries. A back injury prevented him from competing in the synchronised competition at the 2020 British Championships. In December 2017, he underwent surgery for an ankle injury but recovered to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He also dealt with an infection affecting his balance in early 2014 and competed with ankle and elbow injuries at the 2012 Olympic Games. In 2009, he required surgery after breaking his arm during trampoline training.

Laugher resides in Leeds, England, with his partner Lois Toulson, who has also represented Great Britain in diving. Toulson competed at both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Laugher's sporting philosophy is rooted in learning from mistakes. He believes that his successes are due to overcoming numerous errors. His hobbies include playing video games, and he listens to hip-hop music between dives to stay focused.

Looking ahead, Laugher aims to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He has adjusted his retirement plans due to the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics. Initially planning to retire after the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he now hopes to continue until Paris 2024.
