Jacqueline Simoneau Biography

Simoneau began her journey in water sports at the age of eight. Initially interested in diving, she discovered artistic swimming while watching swimmers at the other end of the pool during practice. Moving from a small town to Montreal further ignited her passion for water sports.

As a child, Simoneau practised various sports including artistic swimming, diving, water polo, and swimming. She eventually narrowed her focus to diving and artistic swimming. A diary listing the pros and cons of each sport helped her make the final decision when she had to compete in both on the same day.

Coaching and International Debut

Under the guidance of national coach Gabor Szauder, Simoneau made her international debut for Canada in 2012. Her dedication and talent quickly earned her recognition. In 2012, she was named Athlete of the Year by Synchro Canada.

Turning Point and Achievements

A significant turning point in Simoneau's career came when she won bronze in the solo event at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece. At just 15 years old, she exceeded expectations and brought home Canada's only medal from that competition.

Simoneau's success continued as she joined the Olympic team and competed in subsequent junior world championships. Her achievements have solidified her status as a key figure in Canadian artistic swimming.

Personal Interests and Hobbies

Outside of her sporting career, Simoneau enjoys listening to podcasts, participating in a robotics team, and kayaking. She draws inspiration from Canadian artistic gymnast Kyle Shewfelt and Russian artistic swimmer Natalia Ishchenko.

Health Challenges and Rituals

In 2015, Simoneau faced a health challenge when she was hospitalised due to a haemorrhage caused by a stomach ulcer. This was a side effect of medication she was taking for tendinitis in her right foot. Despite this setback, she continued to excel in her sport.

Simoneau has several pre-competition rituals. She eats a chocolate bar 45 minutes before performing and fills her goggles with water to secure her contact lenses just before diving into the pool. A hug from her coach is also part of her routine.

Philosophy and Community Involvement

Simoneau lives by the motto "A healthy mind in a healthy body." She is actively involved in community work as a spokesperson for Coeliaque Quebec and collaborates with charities like Fondation des Etoiles, Make a Wish Foundation, and Fast and Female.

In 2021, she joined the athletes' commission of the Canadian Olympic Committee. In this role, she supports athletes by participating in committees, marketing efforts, and contract negotiations.

Educational Pursuits

Simoneau is pursuing a degree in podiatric medicine at the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières. Her interest in medicine stems from her curiosity about how the body works and her desire to help others. She is considering specialising in surgery or opening a clinic to offer services to athletes.

Jacqueline Simoneau's journey is marked by dedication, resilience, and a passion for both sports and education. Her contributions to artistic swimming and community initiatives continue to inspire many.
