Fencing is a family tradition for him. His grandfather, Jaroslav Jurka, represented Czechoslovakia at the Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980. His father, Tomas Jurka, also competed in the sport and now coaches him. His younger sister Hana has competed at the national level.
