Jordi Xammar Biography

Xammar's parents initially raced motorbikes before taking up sailing. Despite their reservations about competitive sports, Xammar's passion for sailing grew. He recalls not knowing how to swim when he first went sailing, with Spanish professional motorbike rider Sito Pons teaching him during a summer holiday. By ten, he competed in his first championship in Spain.

Clubs and Coaching

Xammar is affiliated with Club Nautic de Cambrils and Club Nautic Garraf. His coaching team includes Gideon Kliger from Israel and Juan de la Fuente from Argentina. These coaches have played a crucial role in shaping his career and guiding him through various competitions.

Awards and Recognitions

Throughout his career, Xammar has received numerous accolades. In 2019, he and his teammate Nicolas Rodriguez were honoured with the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award as the Best Olympic Team by the Monte Real Yachting Club in Baiona, Spain. Earlier recognitions include being named Revelation of the Year by the Sports Federations of Catalonia in 2014 and by the Spanish Sailing Federation in 2010 and 2011.

Humanitarian Efforts

In September 2018, while on a surfing holiday in Bali, Indonesia, Xammar experienced an earthquake that mainly affected Sulawesi island. He decided to volunteer in Palu for four days, helping set up tents and register new refugees. Reflecting on this experience, Xammar described it as the most intense experience of his life but expressed willingness to do it again.

Partnerships and Training

After placing 12th in the 470 class at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Joan Herp, Xammar formed a new partnership with Nicolas Rodriguez. Their collaboration began just as Rodriguez was about to accept a job offer in dentistry. In 2019, they trained alongside the Japanese sailing team on Zamami island, an experience Xammar described as ideal for their preparation.

Other Activities

Xammar has also been involved in other sailing events. He was the skipper of the Spanish Impulse team that competed in the 2017 Youth America's Cup. Additionally, he has participated in the F50 catamaran international series SailGP since its inception in 2019.
