Joseph Choong Biography

Choong's interest in pentathlon was sparked by a desire to match his brother's achievements. A talent scout from Great Britain noticed his potential and invited him to talent identification camps. His success at the U17 European Championships, where he won gold, motivated him to pursue the sport further.

Training During the Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Choong adapted his training regime by setting up a shooting range in his garden. He focused on running and shooting from home when access to facilities was restricted. This innovative approach helped him maintain his skills during challenging times.

Injuries and Setbacks

Choong has faced several injuries throughout his career. In 2015, he broke his ulna, sidelining him for six weeks. A year earlier, he suffered a stress fracture in his shin, which kept him out for two months. In 2013, a torn ligament in his ankle prevented him from training for ten weeks. Additionally, a stress fracture in his foot in 2012 led to an eight-week hiatus.

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, Choong was honoured with the Best Male Pentathlete award at the UIPM's annual awards ceremony. This recognition highlighted his dedication and achievements in the sport.

Family Influence

Choong's younger brother, Henry Choong, has also competed internationally in modern pentathlon. Henry participated in the U24 European Championships in 2019 and the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014.

Philosophy and Motto

Choong lives by the motto: "Early bird gets the worm. Second mouse gets the cheese." This philosophy reflects his approach to training and competition.

Ambitions and Future Plans

Looking ahead, Choong aims to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He seeks redemption after nerves affected his performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Choong plans to prove himself by becoming the first male British athlete to win an individual Olympic medal in modern pentathlon.

Beyond pentathlon, Choong is considering focusing on individual sports like fencing or track running. He expressed interest in participating in fencing World Cups and grand prixs. Additionally, he is curious about exploring track running as a new challenge.

Personal Interests

Apart from sports, Choong enjoys baking, gaming, reading, and other recreational activities. These hobbies provide a balance to his rigorous training schedule.

Joe Choong's journey is marked by resilience and determination. His ability to adapt during difficult times and overcome injuries showcases his commitment to excellence in modern pentathlon.
