Smith's Olympic debut was at Tokyo 2020, where he secured a bronze medal in the Men's 400m Freestyle with a time of 3:43.94. He also reached the finals in the Men's 200m Freestyle and the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay, finishing sixth and fourth, respectively.

At the World Championships, Smith has been part of successful relay teams. In 2022, he won gold in the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay in Budapest. The following year, he earned a silver medal in the same event in Fukuoka. His individual performances include sixth place in the Men's 200m Freestyle in Budapest and seventh place in Fukuoka.

Recent Competitions

In July 2024, Smith competed in the Men's 400m Freestyle Heat 4 at Paris La Defense Arena. The event featured swimmers from Brazil, Switzerland, Belgium, Lithuania, Australia, South Korea, and the USA. The heat took place on 27 July at 12:03 PM local time.

Smith also participated in the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay Final on 30 July at Paris La Defense Arena. The USA team finished second behind Great Britain. Other competing teams included France, Germany, China, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

Career Milestones

Smith began swimming competitively at age seven, inspired by his older brother Grayson. His first major international competition was the 2018 World Short Course Championships in Hangzhou, China. He competed in the 400m individual medley and the 4x200m freestyle relay heats.

In addition to his Olympic and World Championship successes, Smith has excelled at the NCAA level. He was the 2021 NCAA Champion in the 200-yard freestyle and held the NCAA record for the 500-yard freestyle while competing for the University of Florida.

Turning Professional

In 2022, Smith decided to turn professional to focus on international competition. He stated that turning pro allowed him to concentrate entirely on his training schedule and international events.

Open Water Swimming

Smith also enjoys open water swimming. His interest stems from his training with Emmanuel Lanzo at Ridgefield Aquatic Club. He finds open water swimming to be a pure form of racing without lane lines separating competitors.

Personal Interests

Outside of swimming, Smith enjoys golf, cooking, and playing cards. He studied Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. His family includes his father Patrick, mother Sandra, and older brother Grayson.
