James has received numerous accolades throughout his career. He was named Sportsman of the Year by the Grenada Olympic Committee in 2015 and by the Caribbean Sports Journalists' Association in 2014. He also earned the title of Athlete of the Year in Grenada from 2011 to 2014.

In addition, James was the flag bearer for Grenada at the opening ceremonies of both the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He shared the 2012 Sportsman of the Year award with Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
