Kirsty Coventry Biography

Coventry pursued higher education in Business and Hospitality Management at Auburn University in the United States. She resides in Harare, Zimbabwe, with her husband Tyrone Seward and their daughter Ella, born in 2019. She is fluent in English.

Career Highlights

Coventry's career has been marked by numerous accolades. She was named the African Union Sports Council Region Five Sportswoman of the Year in June 2016. Swimming World Magazine recognised her as the African Female Swimmer of the Year eight times between 2004 and 2015.

She also served as Zimbabwe's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Additionally, she was named Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year multiple times, including in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2011.

Challenges and Injuries

Coventry faced several challenges throughout her career. A bout of pneumonia affected her preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In March 2012, she dislocated her patella. Earlier, she missed four months of training at the start of the 2005/06 season due to a knee injury sustained at a World Cup meet in Sydney.

Retirement and Roles Post-Retirement

In September 2016, Coventry announced her retirement from competitive swimming. She expressed pride in representing Zimbabwe and carrying its flag. Post-retirement, she has taken on various significant roles. She served as chairperson of the International Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission and as a board member of the foundation board of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

She also held positions as vice-president of the International Surfing Association and vice-president of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee. Additionally, she was a member of the International Swimming Federation Athletes' Commission.

Breaks and Comebacks

Coventry took breaks from swimming after major championships. After the 2009 World Championships in Rome, she took a break before returning to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She took another break in 2013 and returned to training in 2014 to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

She clarified that these breaks were not retirements but necessary pauses to maintain her performance levels for future competitions.

Tattoo

Coventry has a tattoo of the Olympic rings on her right hip. She got this tattoo after making it to the semifinals of the 100m backstroke at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
