Kristina Bröring-Sprehe Biography

Kristina's journey into equestrian sports started early. Her parents gifted her and her twin sister Tanja a Shetland pony named Maxi when they were four. This early exposure to horses paved the way for her future in equestrian competitions.

Why Equestrian?

Kristina chose equestrian sports because it is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete equally for medals. She believes this unique aspect makes the sport popular among women of all ages.

Influences and Inspirations

Her cousin Jorne Sprehe, also a jumper, has been a significant influence on her career. Kristina admires Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and follows a philosophy centred around her love for horses and turning her hobby into a career.

Awards and Honours

Kristina has received numerous accolades throughout her career. She was awarded the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf) in Germany after winning two medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. She also received this honour in 2012.

In 2016, she was presented with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna Medal for Excellence in Equitation. Additionally, she was named Sportswoman of the Year in Vechta, Germany, in 2012 and 2013.

Family and Personal Life

Kristina is married to Christian Broring and has two daughters, Mila (born in 2019) and Ella (born in 2022). Her family owns the Gestut Sprehe stud farm in Niedersachsen, Germany, where she runs the dressage operation.

Loss of Desperados

In February 2020, Kristina's horse Desperados (Despi) passed away from an aortic rupture. The pair had won team gold and individual bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Despi had been put to stud in 2019 after their last competition together in 2018.

Partner's Promise

In a show of support, Kristina's husband Christian cycled to London to watch her compete at the 2012 Olympic Games. He had promised to travel by bike if she qualified for the event, completing the trip in six days.
