Merritt's older brother Antwan has been the most influential person in his career. Antwan's death in 1999 deeply impacted Merritt, driving him to excel in athletics. "It's like you're no longer running for one man. You're running for two," Merritt said.

International Debut and Achievements

Merritt made his international debut at the Fayetteville Invitational. Over the years, he has earned several accolades, including the 2013 Jesse Owens Award for being the outstanding male track and field athlete of the year in the USA. In 2004, he was named Youth Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field.

Challenges and Comebacks

In 2012, Merritt suffered a hamstring injury at the Diamond League event in Monaco. Despite this setback, he competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London but had to pull up in the first round of the 400m due to the injury.

Sanction and Return

Merritt faced a significant challenge when he tested positive for steroid derivatives between October 2009 and January 2010. He claimed that the substances came from a sexual enhancement product.
