Coach Yogi Breisner has been a significant influence on Collett's career. She also looks up to British equestrian rider Pippa Funnell. Collett's sporting philosophy emphasises the importance of a horse's brain over its physical attributes, believing that any horse can excel regardless of its size or colour.
Collett has faced several injuries throughout her career. In September 2014, she broke four metatarsal bones in her foot after her horse Ouzo slipped and landed on her. A year earlier, she was in a coma for a week following a fall at the British Eventing Horse Trials, which left her with multiple injuries and blindness in one eye.
In recognition of her contributions to equestrian sports, Collett was appointed Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours list. This accolade highlights her dedication and achievements in the field.
Collett runs Laura Collett Eventing out of Penhill Farm near Cheltenham. Before this, she spent four years at Membury Estate and five years at Windy Hollow Stables in Lambourn. She relocated to Penhill Farm in 2018.
In addition to training jumping horses, Collett also trains racehorses. She enjoys making a noticeable difference in their performance, whether they stay at her yard for a week or just a day. Watching them succeed on the track gives her immense satisfaction.
After losing sight in one eye due to a fall in 2013, Collett had to adapt to changes in her peripheral vision. She credits experienced horses for helping her adjust post-accident. If her sight returns, she acknowledges that further adjustments will be necessary.
Laura Collett's journey is marked by early passion, significant achievements, influential mentors, and resilience through injuries. Her dedication to both eventing and racehorse training continues to inspire many in the equestrian community.
