Lauren followed her brother Nolan into fencing. Her brother has been a significant influence on her career. Nolan represented the USA at the 2015 World Cup event in San Jose, Costa Rica. He also competed at the collegiate level for Columbia University.

Lauren trains under several coaches. Daria Schneider coaches her at Harvard University. Her stepfather, Sean McClain, serves as her personal coach. Additionally, Ralf Bissdorf from Germany coaches her at the national level.
