Sands made his international debut in 1999, representing the Bahamas. His most memorable sporting achievement came in 2008 when he won the triple jump bronze medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. This accomplishment remains a highlight of his career.

In 2012, Sands faced a significant setback when he dislocated his right knee during the triple jump event at the London Olympic Games. He underwent surgery at Homerton University Hospital in London and made a successful return to compete at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
