Davenport turned professional in 1993. Her most memorable sporting achievement came in 1998 when she won the US Open. She also received several awards and honours throughout her career. In 2000, she won the ESPY award for Outstanding Women's Tennis Performer.

On April 17, 2000, she became the fourth player since computer rankings began in 1975 to hold the world No.1 rankings in both singles and doubles simultaneously. She joined Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, and Martina Hingis in this elite group.

Injuries and Challenges

Davenport faced several injuries during her career. In March 2006, she aggravated a back injury at Indian Wells, which forced her to miss four months of the Tour, including the French Open and Wimbledon. In 2005, a lower back strain during the Wimbledon final prevented her from defending US summer hardcourt events.

Earlier in her career, she suffered from hamstring and foot injuries at the end of 2003 and underwent surgery on her foot in October that year. Her 2001 season was interrupted by a bruised right knee bone, forcing her off the tour for two-and-a-half months. The injury carried through to 2002, leading to arthroscopic knee surgery in January.

Personal Life and Interests

Davenport enjoys listening to alternative music, doing crosswords, reading magazines, playing with her dogs, and being a wife. Her family has a strong connection to sports. Her father Wink competed in volleyball at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Her mother Ann is president of the Southern California Volleyball Association.

Both of Davenport's older sisters competed in college volleyball. Her husband Jon Leach is the brother of her former coach Rick Leach and played tennis for the University of Southern California.
