Career Highlights

Krpalek's most memorable achievement came in 2016 when he won gold in the -100kg category at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. This victory marked him as the first judoka from the Czech Republic to win an Olympic medal.

He has also been named Czech Judoka of the Year twelve times consecutively from 2008 to 2019 by the Czech Judo Federation. In 2019, he was honoured as Czech Sportsperson of the Year by the Czech Sports Journalists Association.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout his career, Krpalek faced several injuries. He underwent knee surgery in 2014, struggled with shoulder problems in early 2016, and suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle in 2017.

Coaching and Clubs

Krpalek trains under coaches Petr Lacina and Pavel Provazek. He represents USK Prague in the Czech Republic and Galaxy Judo Tigers in Austria.

Weight Category Change

After winning gold in Rio, Krpalek moved up to the +100kg weight class for health reasons and to seek new challenges. He stated that constantly losing weight to fit into a category was unhealthy. The +100kg category focuses more on sheer power rather than technical skills.

Awards and Recognition

In addition to his Olympic success, Krpalek was the flag bearer for the Czech Republic at the 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony. In 2009, he was named Male Junior Judoka of the Year by the European Judo Federation.

Personal Philosophy

Krpalek lives by the motto: "You don't need to speak about a fight. You go for it, and that's it." This philosophy reflects his straightforward approach to competition.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Krpalek aims to compete at future Olympic Games and plans to run his own judo club to coach children. His dedication to judo continues to inspire many young athletes.

Tributes

Krpalek dedicated his 2016 Olympic gold medal to Alexandr Jurecka, a fellow Czech judoka who died in a diving accident in 2015. He carried Jurecka's picture with him during the competition as a tribute.

Family Ties

Lukas Krpalek's older brother, Michal Krpalek, has also competed internationally in judo, representing the Czech Republic at events like the 2014 European Championships.

Lukas Krpalek's journey from a young boy introduced to judo by his uncle to an Olympic gold medallist is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. His achievements continue to inspire future generations of judokas worldwide.
