In September 2002, at the age of 15, Cilic moved to Zagreb, Croatia. His hometown lacked adequate training facilities. He trained at the National Tennis Centre in Zagreb under the guidance of Andrej Tonejc. This move was challenging for him but proved crucial for his career development.

Cilic is right-handed and has been coached by Vedran Martic and Vilim Visak from Croatia. He achieved significant success in his career, with his most memorable sporting achievement being his victory at the US Open in 2014. This win remains a highlight of his career.
