Malaika Mihambo Biography

Mihambo was born to a Tanzanian father and a German mother. She pursued higher education in Economics and Political Science at the University of Mannheim in Germany. Fluent in both English and German, she balances her life as an athlete and a student.

Sporting Career

Competing for LG Kurpfalz, Mihambo is coached by Ralf Weber. She has also participated in sprinting events at national and international levels. In 2020, she secured ninth place in the 60m event at the indoor tour event in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Achievements

In 2019, Mihambo was named Female Athlete of the Year at the German Sports Personality of the Year awards. She also received the same title from the German athletics magazine and website Leichtathletik. Earlier accolades include being named Sport Fellow of the Year by the German Sports Aid Foundation in 2014 and Youth Athlete of the Year in Germany in 2013.

Challenges and Injuries

Mihambo faced several injuries throughout her career. In 2017, she injured a sesamoid bone in her foot, which caused her to miss several months of training. In early 2016, she dealt with inflammation of the patellar tendon in her knee.

Personal Interests

Outside of athletics, Mihambo enjoys going to the theatre, spending time with family and friends, and playing the piano. She looks up to German long jumper Heike Drechsler as her idol.

Unique Practices

Before competitions, Mihambo paints her fingernails in the colours of Germany. Her sporting philosophy is encapsulated in her motto: "Dare to dream and believe in yourself!"

Spiritual Journey

After winning gold in long jump at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, Mihambo went on a spiritual holiday to India. She meditated for 10 hours a day, which she said strengthened her mind and focus.

Future Plans

Mihambo aims to compete at the Olympic Games. Although primarily a long jumper, she has expressed interest in participating in sprint relays if scheduling permits.
