Brunet initially tried taekwondo and dancing but did not enjoy them. A friend suggested fencing, and she was drawn to the sport by the unique attire. She felt liberated behind the fencing mask, which helped her overcome her timidity. She found fencing to be a complete sport, requiring technical, physical, and tactical skills.

Training and Coaching

Brunet trains for up to six hours a day, five days a week. Since 2021, she has been coached by Christian Bauer. Her dedication to training is evident in her rigorous schedule and commitment to improving her skills.

Achievements and Challenges

Brunet's notable achievements include winning two medals at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and securing gold in the team event at the 2018 World Championships in Wuxi, China. However, she has faced challenges, including a right shoulder injury in 2022 that required surgery. This injury caused her to miss significant competitions but she returned to training in September 2022.

Personal Life

Brunet resides in Orléans, France, with her husband Bolade Apithy, who also represented France in fencing at the 2012 and 2020 Olympic Games. The couple trains together at the Christian Bauer Academy in Orléans but maintains a balance by not discussing fencing at home.

Influences and Philosophy

Her parents have been the most influential people in her career. She idolises French judoka Clarisse Agbegnenou. Brunet believes that fencing requires a variety of skills, reflexes, self-control, and respect. She feels so connected to the sport that it almost seems like her sabre is part of her body.

Awards and Honours

In 2021, Brunet was named Knight of the National Order of Merit by the French government. The same year, she was also named Female Fencer of the Year by the French Fencing Federation.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Brunet aims to win gold at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Her journey has been marked by both successes and setbacks, but she remains focused on achieving her goals.
