Marcel made his international debut in 2005, representing Germany. Throughout his career, Marcel has faced several injuries. In 2010, he broke the fibula in his right leg during a friendly meet. In 2014, he tore the ACL in his knee but returned to training after seven months. In 2015, he tore ligaments in his left hand and suffered a concussion from a bicycle accident.

Named Element and Other Activities

In August 2016, the International Gymnastics Federation named an element on the parallel bars after Marcel. The move, known as 'The Nguyen,' involves a free hip circle mount with a three-quarter turn to handstand position. This recognition came after he performed it at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Besides gymnastics, Marcel has diverse interests including art, golf, cars, and cats. In 2017, he participated in the German reality television show 'Dance, dance, dance,' showcasing his versatility beyond sports.
