Maria was born to an English mother and a Colombian father, which explains her English surname, Williams. She pursued higher education in Administration Studies in Medellín, Colombia. Her bilingual ability in English has also been an asset throughout her career.

Career and Achievements

Maria's career has been marked by numerous accolades. In 2005, she was named Sportswoman of the Year by the newspaper El Espectador. This recognition came after her notable performance at the 2004 Olympics.

However, her journey has not been without challenges. After the 2004 Olympics, she tested positive for heptaminol, leading to the temporary stripping of her medal. Maria had taken a headache pill called Neo-Saldina before her race. She appealed the decision, and a Switzerland-based court upheld her appeal. The court found that isometheptene, present in the pills, was not on the banned substances list for the Games. Consequently, her medal was returned to her.

Coaching and Training

Maria has been under the guidance of coach Jose Julian Velasques since 2011. She trains with the Indeportes Government of Antioquia team in Colombia. Her dedication to training is evident despite facing setbacks like the accident in Antioquia where she hit a drunk pedestrian while training.
