Huizinga's judo career spanned four Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008. His pinnacle achievement came in Sydney in 2000 when he won gold in the -90kg division. He also secured bronze medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympics. At the European Championships, he claimed five golds, two silvers, and five bronze medals.

Injuries and Challenges

Throughout his career, Huizinga faced several injuries. In 1996, he injured his left knee and underwent surgery in 2000. He broke his index finger during the 2002 Dutch national championships, which led to a five-month hiatus due to infection. He also tore ligaments in his knee in 2003 and 2006, each time sidelining him for three months.

Awards and Honours

Huizinga's achievements earned him numerous accolades. He was the flag bearer for The Netherlands at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In October 2000, he was named Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion for his Sydney Olympics success. Huizinga has held various leadership roles. In 2015, he was appointed chairman of the Dutch Survival Association. Since 2014, he has been vice president of the supervisory board of the Topsport Foundation Rotterdam.

Chef de Mission

In December 2014, Huizinga was appointed chef de mission for the Dutch delegation at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. He had previously served in this role for the Dutch delegation at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

Military Service

From October 1997 until December 2008, Huizinga served as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force. This period overlapped with his competitive judo career, showcasing his ability to balance multiple demanding roles.
