Mark Todd Biography

Todd's career took off when he worked with showjumpers and bought a horse named Top Hunter. Initially focused on jumping, Todd transitioned to eventing when Top Hunter excelled in various events. This shift led them to compete in the world championships.

One of Todd's most memorable achievements was winning individual Olympic gold for the second time at the 1988 Games in Seoul. He also claimed victory at the Badminton Horse Trials in England for the fourth time in 2011.

Injuries and Superstitions

Todd faced significant injuries at about age 15, including broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a broken jaw. Despite these setbacks, he continued to excel in his sport. He has a unique superstition: he doesn't like using new equipment on horses for the cross-country phase without rubbing it in dirt first.

Awards and Honours

Throughout his career, Todd received numerous accolades. In 2018, he was inducted into the Equestrian Sports New Zealand Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was named Knights Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and received a knighthood at Buckingham Palace.

Todd was also named Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1984 and Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995. The International Equestrian Federation named him Rider of the 20th Century.

Todd competed in equestrian jumping at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992. In 2011, he won the Badminton Horse Trials in England at age 55, becoming the oldest rider to claim victory at the event.

In August 2019, Todd announced his retirement from competitive eventing to focus on training racehorses. This was his second retirement; he had previously quit between 2000 and 2008 to work in the horseracing industry.

Todd resides in Swindon, England, with his wife Carolyn and their children Lauren and James. He is fluent in English and holds a degree in Agricultural Studies from Waikato Technical Institute in Hamilton, New Zealand.
