He lives on the Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, with his wife Darina, son Georgi (born in 1992), and daughter Maria-Veronika (born in 1997). He speaks Bulgarian, English, Macedonian, and Russian. He studied Sport Studies at the National Sports Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria.
In addition to his canoeing career, he was crowned Mr Bulgaria in bodybuilding in 1993. However, he did not compete for Mr Europe or Mr Universe due to the extensive preparation required. He felt that competing at that level demanded skills akin to professional modelling.
He is associated with the Varsity Lakes Paddlers club on the Gold Coast. His nickname is Marty, as noted on his LinkedIn profile as of January 2014.
