Benus is married to Ivana Benusova and has three sons: Simon (born 2013), Tobias (born 2015), and Sebastian (born 2019). He speaks Slovak and enjoys hiking, ice hockey, and spending time with his family.

Benus trains with Sportove Centrum Policie in Slovakia. He was named flag bearer for Slovakia at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He also received the Canoeist of the Year award in 2011, 2015, and 2016 from the Slovak Canoe Association.
