Mathew Helm Biography

Representing Australia, he won medals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. His bronze medal in the 10m platform event at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka was Australia's first in individual men's events.

Injuries and Challenges

In August 2007, he suffered a stress fracture in his ankle. After returning to competition too soon, he fractured it again and had to wear a cast for six weeks. He also dealt with tonsillitis during the 2004 Australian Championships.

He fractured his thumb multiple times: before the 2003 World Championships, two months before the 2004 Olympic Games, and again at the World Cup in Beijing in 2008. Additionally, he suffered stress fractures of the L3 and L5 vertebrae in 1999, requiring three months off diving.

Personal Interests

His hobbies include singing, dancing, spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, playing his guitar, sleeping, and listening to techno music. His father has been the most influential person in his career.

Role Models

He looks up to Michael Murphy and Xiong Ni as his heroes. His sporting philosophy is: "Follow your dreams, seek perfection and never give up."

Retirement and Return

He retired after the 2006 Commonwealth Games along with his synchro partner Robert Newberry. However, his passion for diving returned when he served as an ambassador for the diving team at the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. He resumed training in early 2007.

Other Activities

He is a qualified lifeguard. He also has several tattoos: 'perfection' written in Chinese on his left shoulder, the Olympic rings on his lower back, and a diver on his left ankle.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, he aims to become an Olympic Games champion on the 10m platform.
