After the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Emmons discovered he had a bulging disc and muscle imbalances in his back. It took six months to recover. In September 2010, he developed thyroid cancer and had his thyroid removed.
Emmons believes that no matter how stressful a competition might be, aligning the sights and making a great shot is always fun. This philosophy keeps him motivated during competitions.
Emmons was named USA Shooting Male Athlete of the Year in 2007. His wife Katerina represented the Czech Republic in three Olympic Games, winning gold and silver in 2008 and bronze in 2004. She retired from shooting in June 2015.
In 2013, Emmons relocated to the Czech Republic with his family. He gained Czech citizenship in late 2014 but continues to represent the US in shooting. In 2014, Emmons switched to a new rifle and ammunition due to equipment issues affecting his performance. He also began focusing on the psychological aspect of shooting and reading books on happiness and well-being. This new approach has positively impacted his training and outlook on life.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Emmons led the field in the final of the 50m rifle three position event but slipped out of medal contention due to a premature shot. However, he won silver in the prone 50m rifle event. Emmons continues to be an influential figure in shooting sports with his dedication to training and coaching while balancing personal interests and family life.
