Grevers trains at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He swims four hours daily, six days a week. He is affiliated with Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics in the United States.
Known by nicknames like "Dutch" and "Nu," Grevers enjoys playing video games, volleyball, spikeball, basketball, ultimate frisbee, table football, table tennis, and reading sci-fi books.
Grevers competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. These events stand out as his most memorable sporting achievements.
High school coaches Lea and Erik Maurer have been the most influential figures in his career. He looks up to US swimmers Aaron Peirsol and Josh Davis as his idols.
In June 2007, Grevers fractured his knee cap. He finds comfort in his routine before races. "I envision the perfect race right before," he says.
Grevers believes in focusing on solutions rather than problems. He received the Perseverance Award at the USA Swimming Foundation's Golden Goggles Awards in 2017.
His sister Carolyn swam for the University of Kansas, and his brother Andy competed for Northern Illinois University. His wife Annie swam for the University of Arizona and competed at the World University Games in 2011.
After competing at the 2021 US Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Grevers shifted his focus towards family and work commitments. He finished sixth in the 100m backstroke final and missed qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Grevers considered retiring after failing to make the US team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The birth of his daughter Skylar gave him a new perspective on balancing family life with training.
Apart from swimming, Grevers is involved in real estate. In 2020, he worked as a volunteer swimming coach at the University of Arizona. He has expressed interest in starting a swim school or continuing as a coach after retiring from competitive swimming.
Born to Dutch parents in the United States, Grevers chose to represent the USA because it was more challenging. "I wanted it to mean something if I swam in the Olympics," he says.
Grevers' journey reflects a balance between professional achievements and personal commitments. His dedication to swimming remains strong as he continues to explore new opportunities within and beyond the sport.
