Salminen's career took a significant turn when he won gold in the Star class at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with his crewmate Fredrik Loof. This achievement earned them the title of Best Team at the Sports Gala in Sweden in 2012.
In preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Salminen switched to competing solo in the Finn class. Reflecting on this change, he said, "It is nice to make decisions for yourself, but you also need to learn from the times it does not go the right way."
Outside of sailing, Salminen enjoys cycling, windsurfing, golf, skiing, and music. He looks up to Brazilian sailor Robert Scheidt, British sailor Ben Ainsley, and Australian sailor Michael Blackburn as his idols.
Sailing runs in the family for Salminen. His wife Susanne Boidin represented Denmark in sailing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This shared passion for sailing strengthens their bond both on and off the water.
Looking ahead, Salminen aims to win a gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, he has hinted that these might be his last Games due to changes in Olympic sailing events. World Sailing's decision to replace the Finn class with a mixed two-person keelboat offshore event for the 2024 Olympic Games has influenced his thoughts on retirement.
"Unfortunately, with the decision, it looks like it," Salminen said. "I don't really see any other class that I could establish myself in."
Known by nicknames such as "Mad Max" and "Diesel," Salminen's reputation precedes him. These nicknames reflect his tenacity and determination on the water.
As Salminen continues to navigate his career and personal life, his contributions to sailing remain noteworthy. His journey from a young sailor to an Olympic gold medallist serves as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes worldwide.
