He pursued higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying Business and Communications. Since 1994, he has been coached by Bob Larsen at the New York Athletic Club.
One of his most memorable achievements was winning the 2014 Boston Marathon. He also received the 2014 Jesse Owens Award for being the outstanding male track and field athlete of the year in the United States. In 2010, he was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame.
His career has not been without difficulties. In 2011, he left a nasal strip in his shoe during the New York Marathon, causing an infection that sidelined him for three weeks. In 2008, a pelvic stress fracture prevented him from making the US team for the Beijing Olympics.
He resides in San Diego, CA, with his wife Yordanos and their daughters Sara, Fiyori, and Yohana. He enjoys spending time with family and friends and reading autobiographies.
His sporting philosophy is inspired by life’s challenges: "Like a marathon, life can sometimes be difficult, challenging and present obstacles. However if you believe in your dreams, and never ever give up, things will turn out for the best." His hero is US basketball coach John Wooden.
