He began his athletic journey in middle school in the United States. A significant moment came when he ran a 5:20 mile, earning an A at school and a T-shirt. This achievement helped him overcome shyness and sparked his interest in athletics.

Education and Training

He pursued higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying Business and Communications. Since 1994, he has been coached by Bob Larsen at the New York Athletic Club.

Career Highlights

One of his most memorable achievements was winning the 2014 Boston Marathon. He also received the 2014 Jesse Owens Award for being the outstanding male track and field athlete of the year in the United States. In 2010, he was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame.

His career has not been without difficulties. In 2011, he left a nasal strip in his shoe during the New York Marathon, causing an infection that sidelined him for three weeks. In 2008, a pelvic stress fracture prevented him from making the US team for the Beijing Olympics.
