Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, he began swimming at the tender age of four. Although he also played football as a child, he decided to focus on swimming at age 13. He believed he was better at football but found swimming more enjoyable. "It must have been winter when I decided," he recalls.

Throughout his career, he faced several injuries. A back spasm three months before the 2014 Commonwealth Games hampered his performance. In November 2013, he had to have his heart restarted after an intensive training session but returned to training two days later. He also competed with a shoulder injury at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, and ruptured ankle ligaments in March 2011.
Despite these challenges, he achieved significant milestones. He was named the 2013 University of Bath Sports Personality of the Year. His younger sister Lauren performed as a dancer during the closing ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
In February 2017, he announced his retirement from competitive swimming. "My body just can't take the intensity any more," he stated. His decision marked the end of a remarkable journey in the sport.
Apart from swimming, he has various hobbies including fashion, golf, listening to music, watching sports, and supporting the Scottish football team Celtic. He is an ardent Celtic fan. The 200m breaststroke final at the 2012 Olympic Games was shown live on the big screen at Celtic Park before a Champions League qualification match.
He spent a year living in Paris, France, where he trained for swimming and learned French. This experience added another dimension to his already diverse skill set.
His sporting philosophy revolves around perseverance and self-belief. "Perseverance and self-belief are the most important things," he says. This motto has guided him through various phases of his career.
