Matsutomo made her international debut in 2009, representing Japan in Osaka. Known for her right-handed play, she quickly gained recognition on the global stage. Her dedication and skill have earned her numerous accolades over the years.

Achievements and Awards

In 2016, Matsutomo and her doubles partner Ayaka Takahashi received the Female Player of the Year Award from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The duo also won the Yoneyamaminoru Award from the Yonex Sports Foundation in Japan. Additionally, they were honoured with an Excellence Award at the Japanese Olympic Committee Sports Awards.

The same year, Matsutomo received the Tokushima Prefecture Citizen Honorary Award. She and Takahashi also clinched the Japanese S/J League's Best Athlete Award in 2010, 2011, and 2015. Their most notable achievement came when they became the first Japanese badminton players to win gold at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Challenges and Changes

Matsutomo faced a significant challenge during her third year of high school when she struggled with a knee injury. Despite this setback, she continued to excel in her sport. In 2020, her long-time doubles partner Ayaka Takahashi retired. Matsutomo then teamed up with Takahashi's husband, Yuki Kaneko, to compete in mixed doubles events.
