One of Larkin's most memorable achievements is winning silver in the 200m backstroke at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2015, he was named the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Male Swimmer of the Year and also won the Swimmer's Swimmer of the Year award at the Australian Swimmer of the Year Awards.
Larkin credits his mother and former coach Dean Pugh, who passed away in 2021, as the most influential figures in his career. His sporting idol is US swimmer Aaron Peirsol. Larkin's sporting philosophy is centred around passion: "You need to love what you do since when you love what you do, then you never work a day in your life."
Larkin faced challenges after failing to win an individual medal at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. However, he made a strong comeback by winning five gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. "I was very low [after Budapest], my confidence was at an absolute low," he admitted.
In 2021, Larkin expressed a preference for focusing on one event rather than competing in both the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley. Despite being short-sighted, he does not use contact lenses while swimming. He believes this helps him stay focused during major events as he is less distracted by the crowd.
In January 2021, Larkin began working as a property analyst with Trilogy Funds in Brisbane. "I am very pleased to announce that I have been given the opportunity to work with one of Australia's leading property-based fund managers," he shared. This role allows him to gain experience in property investments and finance while balancing his sporting commitments.
Larkin resides in Brisbane with his partner Sinead. He holds a degree in Engineering from Queensland University of Technology and speaks English fluently.
