Mitch Valize Biography

He played football as a child and even became a qualified referee. At 18, he stopped playing due to issues with his left leg. Refereeing youth teams became his weekend job, providing more enjoyment than packing bags at a supermarket. He always aimed to excel, often feeling frustrated by referees who were too strict.

He pursued higher education at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. In 2017, he graduated with a master's degree in human movement sciences. This academic background complements his athletic career, providing him with a deep understanding of physical health and performance.

Introduction to Handcycling

His introduction to handcycling came during rehabilitation after his last leg operation in 2015. Due to complications, he couldn't walk with a prosthesis immediately and needed an alternative way to stay fit. Handcycling was the solution. Initially seen as a short-term activity, it quickly grew on him.

He recalls, "I got into that bike for the first time thinking, 'We'll do this for a few weeks, maybe a few months, and then I'm going to do my own thing again'. As I spent more time on the bike, I started to like it more and more."

Challenges and Achievements

Throughout his sporting career, he faced challenges, including breaking his arm during training. Despite such setbacks, he remained committed to his sport. His dedication is evident in his participation in other sports like sitting volleyball, where he received a call-up to the Netherlands talent team.

His hero is Italian Para cyclist and racing driver Alessandro Zanardi. Inspired by Zanardi's resilience and achievements, he adopted a similar mentality: "If something looks impossible or somebody says you cannot do it, then just look around for solutions and try it your own way."

Coaching and Future Plans

Under the guidance of national coach Floris Goesinnen, he continues to hone his skills in handcycling. His journey from rehabilitation to becoming an accomplished athlete is a testament to his perseverance and passion for sports.

Looking ahead, he plans to continue competing at high levels and aims to inspire others through his story. His journey underscores the importance of resilience and finding alternative paths when faced with challenges.

Personal Interests

Apart from handcycling, he enjoys football and has been involved in the sport both as a player and referee. His love for football remains strong despite shifting his focus to handcycling.

He speaks both Dutch and English fluently, which helps him connect with a broader audience. His educational background in health science further enriches his understanding of athletic performance and well-being.

This Dutch athlete's story is one of determination and adaptability. From overcoming physical challenges to excelling in multiple sports, he exemplifies what it means to turn adversity into opportunity.
