He represents Bowerman Track Club in Portland and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. Known by nicknames like "Mospeed" and "Moh," his family has been the most influential force in his career. He idolises British runner Mo Farah and Ethiopian runner Kenenisa Bekele.
His accolades include being named Athlete of the Year in St. Catharines, Canada, in 2009, 2016, and 2019. He was a seven-time All-American at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the 2014 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.
In 2019, he became the first Canadian to win a medal in the 5000m at the World Championships by securing bronze in Doha, Qatar. He also set a national record by running the 5000m in under 13 minutes at the Diamond League event in Rome.
After graduating from university in 2014, he considered quitting athletics but was persuaded by coaches Jerry Schumacher and Pascal Dobert to continue. Their belief led him to join Bowerman Track Club in Portland.
Despite being told he was too skinny to be an athlete during high school, he persevered. He believes distance running involves significant physical contact, leading to frequent injuries.
Before races, he writes out his goals and thoughts to clear any doubts. He also listens to relaxing music or poetry to prepare mentally.
