Asian Games 2023: Indian heptathlete Swapna Barman on Monday (October 2) kicked off a massive controversy after accusing compatriot Nandini Agasara of being transgender.
In a shocking public allegation, Barman, fourth-placed heptathlete, accused Agasara - the bronze medal winner in the event in Hangzhou 2022 - of being transgender, which according to her, contravenes athletics rules.

Swapna - who was the gold medallist in the event in 2018 Asian Games - took to social media, claiming that Nandini's position as a transgender goes against the protocols of athletics.
"I have lost my Asian Games bronze medal to a transgender woman at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. I want my medal back as it is against the rules of our Athletics. Help me and support me, please," Swapna alleged. Swapna narrowly missed out securing the bronze, landing fourth place with a score of 5708 points.
Upon Nandini's triumph, accolades poured in from the entire nation. Particularly noteworthy was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's compliment wherein he celebrated the "phenomenal Bronze Medal by Nandini Agasara". PM Modi further hailed her as an "absolute champion, personifying sporting spirit and excellence."
While there is no reaction from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Swapna's allegations, many believe the athlete, who started representing Madhya Pradesh this season, will face some disciplinary action.
This controversy has clouded what would have otherwise been a straightforward celebration of a formidable performance by an Indian athlete. As the Athletics Federation of India is investigating the case, the nation holds its breath and eagerly awaits the outcome.
