Asian Games 2023: One of India's glittering talents is shooting Sift Kaur Samra, who etched her name in golden letters in the country's sporting history by clinching a gold medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position final.
Beyond this prestigious gold, Samra left an impressive mark on the international shooting scene by establishing a groundbreaking world record with her staggering 469.6 points.

Coming hard on her heels was China's Zhang Qiongyue, who pocketed the silver medal with 462.3 points. Ashi Chouksey, a fellow compatriot and a worthy participant, took up the third position, winning a bronze with a commendable 451.9 points.
22-year-old Sift was also part of the shooting trio of Sift Kaur, Ashi Chouksey, and Manini Kaushik, which secured a silver medal for India in the women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions team event with a score of 1754 points. It was the first medal of the day for India on September 27.
Born on September 9, 2001, in Punjab, this prodigy of sharpshooting demonstrated her prowess in the titanic contest held in Hangzhou, standing tall on the podium, symbolizing India's increasing dominance in the sport. Sift's monumental achievement in this event is the nation's first gold medal after the long intermission from 1986.
Trained at the renowned Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi under the watchful guidance of Mrs Deepali Deshpande, Sift meticulously honed her skills aiming for international excellence. Notably, her exceptional talent introduced a new benchmark in this sport.

Emblemizing quintessential perseverance and grit, Sift's journey toward this golden victory was adorned with numerous other laurels. In the 50m 3P event, she stands 8th in the world, an achievement that further proves her prowess in the field. She fortified India's position in the international domain when she secured a quota place for the nation in the ISSF World Championship in Baku, in 2023.
Sift finished fifth to miss a medal but secured a Paris Olympic quota with 429.1 points. In that final in Baku, China's Zhang Qiongyue won the gold medal but Sift settled the score with the Chinese in the Asian Games final.
Prior to this, she had shown her mettle in the ISSF World Cup held in Bhopal earlier this year by winning a bronze in the individual event. The ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, 2022, brought more accolades to this shooting star when she won a gold in the individual event and two silver medals in the mixed team.
Moreover, in the team event in the ISSF World Changwon in 2022, she had a bronze to her credit, thus confirming her consistent performance and dedication towards the sport.
Sift Kaur Samra has emerged not just as a star performer, but also as an inspiring role model for aspiring shooters in India. Her achievements present a beacon of hope and promise to future generations. It is hoped that her story will serve to attract more participation in the sport and foster a culture of shooting as a promising professional undertaking in India.
