The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has on Sunday (August 13) expressed its deep concern regarding the recent letter signed by numerous female chess players, denouncing the presence of sexism and sexual violence within the chess community.
This powerful initiative, spearheaded by a group of 14 French women in chess, has resonated throughout the global chess sphere.

In its official release, FIDE said, "We commend these brave women for their unwavering courage and unity. FIDE staunchly opposes all forms of sexist behaviour and actions, including any kind of abuse. We take immense pride in witnessing an unprecedented surge in female participation in chess and firmly believe that they deserve a secure and respectful environment."
The global chess body went on to add that it is crucial for it to emphasize that it treats every report of sexism or abuse with utmost seriousness and that it is dedicated to enhancing the world of chess.
"Our objective is to encourage more girls and women to engage in chess and pursue their passion—be it as a hobby, sport, or profession. Consequently, we are actively developing a comprehensive safeguarding policy specifically tailored for women involved in chess.
"Our aim is to equip them with the necessary resources and support network that will enable them to feel secure and confident within our community. In the interim period, we strongly urge any female players who have encountered misconduct to come forward and file a complaint with FIDE's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC)," it added further.
FIDE has also assured that the confidentiality of the complainants will be maintained throughout this process while respecting their privacy and it firmly believes in harnessing the strength of its extended chess family.
"Together, we can cultivate an improved culture within our community—a culture that fosters safety, respectfulness, and inclusivity for all individuals. Even if only one woman experiences abuse within our ranks, it remains one too many—an issue that demands immediate attention from us all," FIDE signed off.
