Gulveer Singh's Golden Stride: From Missing Paris To Rewriting History In 2025

From heartbreak to heroics, Gulveer Singh's journey has been a masterclass in perseverance, grit, and relentless ambition. Once on the edge of Olympic qualification, the long-distance runner from Uttar Pradesh has now become India's shining hope in athletics.

At the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, Gulveer carved his name into history, clinching India's first gold medal of the competition by topping the men's 10,000m race in 28:38.63.

With this, he joined an elite club that includes Hari Chand (1975) and G. Lakshmanan (2017) - the only other Indians to have won this event at the Asian Championships. His surge in the final lap, leaving behind Bahrain's Albert Kibichi Rop, was a reminder of the beast Gulveer has become in distance running.

But this victory is just the tip of the iceberg.

The 2025 season has been nothing short of spectacular for the 25-year-old. Gulveer opened the year with a bang, breaking a 16-year-old national record in the 3000m indoor event in Boston, clocking 7:38.26. That performance set the tone for what would be a historic few months.

Soon after, he etched his name in the record books again by becoming the first-ever Asian to run a sub-13-minute 5000m short track, clocking 12:59.77 at the BU Terrier DMR Challenge.

The feat not only broke the national record but also qualified him for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, despite the heartbreak of missing the Paris Olympics last year.

In March, at the "The Ten" competition in the USA, Gulveer redefined endurance again by smashing his own national record in the 10,000m, clocking a sensational 27:00.22 - currently the best by any Asian in 2025. He also holds the top Asian mark in the 5000m this season.

The statistics are staggering. National records in both the 5000m (13:11.82) and 10,000m, multiple sub-13 and sub-28 performances, and now a continental gold medal. Even a Diamond League debut was added to his resume recently, finishing ninth in the men's 5000m - a significant leap into the global elite circuit.

Yet, what makes Gulveer's rise even more compelling is the shadow that loomed large last year. Despite stellar form, he failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics, finishing 13:34.27 at the Interstate Championships in Panchkula - shy of the qualifying mark. Ranked 57th, the heartbreak was real. But for Gulveer, it was only a bend in the road.

And now, just a year later, he's not just back - he's leading Asia, rewriting records, and reimagining what's possible for Indian distance running.

In the lanes where heartbreak once lingered, Gulveer Singh now runs with fire. And as Tokyo World Championships 2025 approaches, India has a new long-distance star leading the charge - gold-laced, record-hungry, and unstoppable.
