Hero Indian Open 2026: England's Alex Fitzpatrick stuns Eugenio Chacarra to clinch maiden title as Indians finish outside top 40

Gurugram, March 29: England's Alex Fitzpatrick produced a sensational final-round charge to clinch his maiden DP World Tour title at the Hero Indian Open 2026, edging defending champion Eugenio Chacarra by two shots in a gripping finish at the DLF Golf and Country Club on Sunday (March 29).

Fitzpatrick carded a closing 69 to finish at nine-under 279, overturning a four-shot deficit to deny Chacarra, who faltered late with a 75 to end at seven-under. Meanwhile, the Indian contingent endured a disappointing week, with none managing a top-40 finish.

Fitzpatrick's breakthrough moment

Coming into the final round chasing the leader, Fitzpatrick showed remarkable composure on a course that punishes even the slightest error. Despite early bogeys on the third and fourth holes, the Englishman regrouped brilliantly.

A stunning run on the back nine - featuring five birdies in seven holes - turned the tide in his favour. Even a closing double bogey on the 18th could not deny him a breakthrough win. "Hopefully I can continue to push on," Fitzpatrick (27) said after sealing the biggest win of his career.

The victory also marked a special family milestone, with his brother Matt Fitzpatrick having won on the PGA Tour the previous week, making them the first siblings to win in successive weeks across the two tours.

Chacarra's title defence falls short

Chacarra entered Sunday with a commanding four-shot lead but struggled to maintain momentum under pressure. After a steady start, the Spaniard's challenge unraveled on the closing stretch with three consecutive bogeys from the 15th to 17th, effectively ending his hopes of back-to-back titles.

The Spaniard, who had been composed all week, could not capitalise on key moments despite flashes of brilliance. Still, his performance across the week reaffirmed his comfort at DLF, even as the title slipped away.

Daffue, Sullivan share third

South Africa's MJ Daffue finished third at five-under 283 after a closing 73, alongside Andy Sullivan and France's Ugo Coussaud. Further down, players like Ewen Ferguson, Calum Hill and Francesco Molinari rounded off the top positions.

Indian golfers: disappointing finish at home

It was a tough week overall for the Indian contingent, who failed to make a significant impact on home soil.

Manoj S and Om Prakash Chouhan emerged as the best-performing Indians, finishing tied 43rd at 10-over 298. Manoj, however, claimed the honour of top Indian based on a better final-round card.

Kshitij Naveed Kaul, the only other Indian to make the cut, finished 64th at 19-over 307, highlighting the struggles of the home players on one of the toughest courses on the DP World Tour.

A new champion emerges at DLF

The DLF Golf and Country Club once again lived up to its reputation, producing a dramatic finish and testing even the best players in the field.

For Fitzpatrick, this victory marks the culmination of years of perseverance and belief, while for Chacarra, it will be a case of what might have been.

As the curtain falls on the 2026 edition, the Hero Indian Open once again delivered drama, resilience and a new champion.
