Asian Games 2023: The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team achieved a remarkable feat at the ongoing Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China.
Initially, they secured a bronze medal with a time of 3:14.34s in the event, while Sri Lanka claimed silver with a slightly better time of 3:14.25s, and Bahrain clinched the gold with a swift 3:14.02s.

However, India's fortune took an unexpected turn as Sri Lanka faced disqualification due to a lane infringement violation, and India's bronze was subsequently upgraded to a silver medal. The disqualification was made under rule TR 17.3.1, which addresses lane infringement issues. Kazakhstan, who originally finished fourth with a time of 3:24.85s, was promoted to the bronze medal position.
This upgraded India's overall medal count at the ongoing Asian Games to an impressive 60 medals, including 13 gold, 24 silver, and now, 23 bronze. The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team, consisting of Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, R. Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh, and Subha Venkatesan, ran a spirited race, clocking 3:14.34s.
However, they faced stiff competition from Bahrain, who clinched the gold medal with a remarkable time of 3:14.02s. Meanwhile, the Kazakhstan team secured the bronze medal with a time of 3:24.85s, benefitting from Sri Lanka's disqualification.
In other track and field events earlier that day, India continued to shine. The women's 3000m steeplechase event saw India bag a silver and a bronze medal. Ancy Sojan delivered an outstanding performance in the women's long jump, earning a silver medal for her remarkable efforts.
Parul Chaudhary and Priti also showcased their talent, securing silver and bronze medals, respectively, in a thrilling battle for third place. The women's 3000m steeplechase event witnessed a standout performance by Bahraini world champion Winfred Yavi, who not only clinched the gold but also shattered the Asian Games record with a stunning time of 9:18.28.
Parul Chaudhary set a new personal best with a time of 9:27.63, securing the silver medal. Priti put on a fierce fight for the bronze against Bahrain's Getnet Mekonnen, ultimately achieving her own personal best time of 9:43.32.
Later in the day, Ancy Sojan demonstrated her prowess in the long jump, improving her personal best twice during the competition. She leaped to 6.56m in her third attempt and reached an impressive 6.63m in her fifth attempt, securing a well-deserved silver medal.
Shaili Singh, another Indian athlete in the competition, finished fifth with her best attempt of 6.48m. China's Xiong Shiqi secured the gold with a jump of 6.73m, while Hong Kong's Yue Nga Yan claimed the bronze with a personal best mark of 6.50m.
