National Games 2023: Hurdlers Jyoti Yarraji and Tejas Shirse break Games records

Panaji, Oct 30: Jyoti Yarraji and Tejas Shirse, both Asian Games medalists, set new National Games records as they clinched gold in the 100m and 110m hurdles on Monday (October 30) during the 37th National Games held at the G.M.C Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.

Jyoti broke her own record, finishing in an impressive 13.22 seconds. Tejas had previously rewritten the games record in the heats with a time of 13.80 seconds but went even faster in the finals, completing the race in 13.71 seconds.

As the games continue, Maharashtra currently leads the medal tally with 47 gold, 34 silver, and 33 bronze. Haryana follows in second place with 18 gold, 15 silver, and 17 bronze, while the defending champions, SSCB, hold the third spot with 17 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze.

Priyanka Goswami also made her mark on this record-breaking day by surpassing the games record in the 20km walk with a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and 35 seconds. This achievement broke the previous record held by Munita Prajapati, who earned a bronze medal.

In the 400m event, Vithya Ramraj from Tamil Nadu secured gold with a time of 52.85 seconds, ahead of Jyotikasri D from Andhra Pradesh and Kerala's Jisna Mathew. In the men's category, K. Avinash from Tamil Nadu took home the gold, beating Haryana's Vikrant Panchal, while Maharashtra's Rahul Ramesh Kadam secured the bronze.

More gold medals were won in Women's Shot Put by Abha Khatua of Maharashtra with a throw of 17.09m and in the Men's Long Jump by Muhammed Anees of Kerala, who recorded a jump of 8.15m.

In the 1500m events, Lili Das from West Bengal outpaced K.M Chanda from Delhi in the women's category to secure the gold, while Ritesh Ohre from Madhya Pradesh claimed the gold in the men's 1500m with a time of 3 minutes and 40.93 seconds.

The men's 20km walk saw Suraj Panwar from Uttarakhand taking gold with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, and 43 seconds. SSCB's Servin secured the silver in 1 hour, 41 minutes, and 13 seconds, while Hardeep from Haryana won the bronze with a time of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 24 seconds.

In the Decathlon competition, Tejaswin Shankar from Delhi leads with 4062 points at the end of Day 1, closely followed by Kerala's N. Thowfeeq.

Day 2 of the aquatic competition at the Campal Swimming Complex saw Delhi's Kushagra Rawat and Bhavya Sachdeva setting new National Games records in the 1500m and 800m freestyle swimming categories.

Kushagra Rawat took gold in the men's 1500m freestyle with a dominant performance, stopping the clock at 15 minutes and 38.73 seconds. In the women's 800m freestyle event, Bhavya Sachdeva held off the initial challenge from Telangana's Vritti Agarwal to secure her second consecutive National Games gold medal with a time of 9 minutes and 8.60 seconds.

The National Games records were also broken in the men's and women's 4x100 Medley. Services clinched the gold in the men's category, followed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with all three teams surpassing the previous record.

In the women's 4x100 Medley, Karnataka secured the gold, followed by Bengal and Odisha, with both the gold and silver medal-winning teams improving on the previous National Games record.

Table Tennis competitions at the Campal Multipurpose Indoor Stadium saw Maharashtra's women beating Haryana 3-1 to claim the gold medal, while in the men's category, Delhi defeated West Bengal 3-1 to secure the gold medal.
