The introduction of the Super5s stage is nothing but an extra layer of entertainment for the spectators besides boosting the level of competition among the contenders. The PVL follows the rules laid down by the International Volleyball Federation.

Prime Volleyball League Rules

  • A match consists of five sets with the team racing to 15 points first wins a set.
  • All five sets are bound to be completed even if the team has already confirmed its win with a 3-0 or 4-0 margin. Only knockout matches have the best-of-three sets rule applied as seen in international or higher-ranked club competitions.
  • A team will earn two points for each win and nought for a loss. In case a team registers a commanding victory of 5-0 then it earns a bonus point, which is three points.
  • A team can activate a Super Point anytime before they cross 11 points. If the team which has called for a Super Point wins that particular point then they will add two points to their tally. Meanwhile, if they lose the Super Point then those two points are awarded to the opposition. Normally, a team picks one point for every point they pick.
  • A Super Serve also allows the team to grab two points. The player who serves has to ensure that he drops the ball to the opposite court without any of its members getting the opportunity to touch it. In other words, the service has to be aced.
  • A team accounts for a point on every occasion the ball lands on the opponent side’s court or the opponent hits out ball outside the marked boundaries on either side of the rectangular court.
  • Each team can use three attempts (except for the block near the nets) to clear the ball towards the other side of the court.
  • The players can use any part of the body to loft the ball. However, they aren’t allowed to catch or hold the ball. Usually, the players use their wrists to touch the volleyball.
  • A player cannot touch the ball on consecutive terms.
  • A player cannot touch the net while the ball is in action.
  • In case teams are tied at 14-14, a decisive point comes into effect, unlike the traditional method of deuce and advantage.
